민서는 대학교 근처의 오래된 기숙사에서 혼자 살고 있었어요.

Minseo was living alone in an old dormitory near the university.

건물은 지어진 지 오래돼서 밤마다 배관 소리와 삐걱거리는 바닥 소리가 계속 들렸어요.

Because the building was old, the sounds of pipes and creaking floors could be heard every night.

처음에는 별로 신경 쓰지 않았지만, 어느 날부터 이상한 일이 시작됐어요.

At first she did not pay much attention to it, but one day strange things began happening.

매일 새벽 두 시 정각이 되면 복도 끝에서 누군가 천천히 걸어오는 발소리가 들렸어요.

Every day at exactly two in the morning, footsteps slowly approaching from the end of the hallway could be heard.

처음에는 다른 학생이라고 생각했어요.

At first, she thought it was another student.

하지만 이상한 점은 발소리가 항상 민서의 방 앞에서 멈췄다는 거였어요.

But the strange thing was that the footsteps always stopped in front of Minseo's room.

그리고 몇 초 동안 아무 소리도 나지 않다가 다시 멀어졌어요.

Then for several seconds there was no sound at all before the footsteps moved away again.

며칠 동안 잠을 제대로 자지 못한 민서는 결국 관리인에게 그 이야기를 했어요.

After several sleepless days, Minseo eventually told the caretaker about it.

하지만 관리인은 잠시 조용해지더니 이상한 질문을 했어요.

However, the caretaker became silent for a moment and then asked a strange question.

“혹시 새벽 두 시에 문 열어본 적 있어요?”

"Have you ever opened the door at two in the morning?"

민서는 당연히 없다고 대답했어요.

Minseo answered that of course she had not.

그러자 관리인의 표정이 조금 굳어졌어요.

Then the caretaker's expression stiffened slightly.

“절대로 열지 마세요.”

"Never open it."

그날 이후로 민서는 오히려 더 불안해졌어요.

After that day, Minseo became even more anxious.

왜 문을 열면 안 되는지 계속 생각났기 때문이에요.

It was because she could not stop wondering why she should not open the door.

그리고 며칠 뒤 결국 호기심이 두려움을 이기고 말았어요.

Several days later, her curiosity eventually overcame her fear.

새벽 두 시가 되자 복도 끝에서 익숙한 발소리가 천천히 다가오기 시작했어요.

At two in the morning, the familiar footsteps slowly began approaching from the end of the hallway.

민서는 숨을 죽인 채 문 앞에 서 있었어요.

Holding her breath, Minseo stood in front of the door.

그리고 발소리가 멈춘 순간 천천히 문고리를 돌렸어요.

The moment the footsteps stopped, she slowly turned the doorknob.

복도에는 아무도 없었어요.

There was nobody in the hallway.

하지만 복도 끝 벽에 예전에는 없었던 검은 문 하나가 생겨나 있었어요.

However, a black door that had never been there before had appeared at the end of the hallway.

문 아래에서는 희미한 빛이 새어나오고 있었고, 안쪽에서는 누군가 작게 웃는 소리가 들렸어요.

A faint light leaked from beneath the door, and from inside came the sound of someone quietly laughing.

그때 민서는 갑자기 깨달았어요.

At that moment, Minseo suddenly realized something.

매일 들렸던 발소리는 밖에서 다가오는 소리가 아니라, 그 문 안에서 누군가 나오고 있던 소리였다는 걸요.

The footsteps she had heard every night were not someone approaching from outside, but someone coming out from inside that door.
