카일은 수도에서 가장 유명한 마법 연구소에서 일하고 있었지만 좀처럼 인정을 받지 못하고 있었다.

Kyle worked at the most famous magical research institute in the capital, but he could hardly gain recognition.

그가 몇 년째 연구하고 있던 분야는 이미 수백 년 전에 금지된 영혼 마법이었다.

The field he had been researching for years was soul magic, which had been forbidden centuries earlier.

"아직도 그런 위험한 연구를 계속하고 있나?" 동료 연구원인 세리아가 걱정스러운 표정으로 물었다.

"Are you still continuing that dangerous research?" asked his colleague Seria with a worried expression.

"위험하다는 이유만으로 진실을 외면해서는 안 되지," 카일이 조용히 대답했다.

"We must not turn away from the truth simply because it is dangerous," Kyle answered quietly.

세리아는 한숨을 내쉬며 창밖을 바라보았다.

Seria let out a sigh and looked outside the window.

"하지만 왕실은 그 마법과 관련된 모든 기록을 불태워 버렸잖아."

"But the royal family burned every record related to that magic."

"그래서 더욱 수상하다는 거야."

"That's exactly why it's even more suspicious."

그날 밤 늦게 연구소 지하에 혼자 남아 있던 카일은 오래된 금속 상자 하나를 발견했다.

Late that night, while alone in the underground level of the institute, Kyle discovered an old metal box.

상자 표면에는 이상한 문양과 함께 고대어가 새겨져 있었다.

Strange patterns and ancient writing were engraved on the surface of the box.

"달빛이 가장 짙어지는 밤에 계약은 완성된다…"

"The contract shall be completed on the night when the moonlight grows deepest..."

카일은 작게 중얼거리며 상자를 열었다.

Kyle muttered quietly and opened the box.

순간 차가운 바람이 지하실 전체를 휩쓸고 지나갔다.

At that moment, a cold wind swept through the entire basement.

그리고 눈부신 빛 가운데에서 한 여자가 천천히 모습을 드러냈다.

Then, from within a dazzling light, a woman slowly revealed herself.

은빛 머리카락을 지닌 그녀는 카일을 한동안 말없이 바라보았다.

The silver-haired woman silently stared at Kyle for a while.

"드디어 나를 깨운 사람이 나타났군."

"At last, someone has appeared who awakened me."

"당신은 누구지?" 카일이 경계하며 물었다.

"Who are you?" Kyle asked cautiously.

"예전 사람들은 나를 달의 수호자라고 불렀어."

"Long ago, people called me the Guardian of the Moon."

"수호자라고? 그런 존재는 전설에서만 등장하잖아."

"A guardian? Such beings only appear in legends."

여자는 희미한 미소를 지었다.

The woman gave a faint smile.

"전설이라는 것은 대부분 사라진 진실의 조각이란다."

"Legends are often fragments of truths that have disappeared."

카일은 혼란스러운 표정으로 그녀를 바라보았다.

Kyle looked at her with a confused expression.

"그렇다면 왜 지금까지 봉인되어 있었던 거지?"

"Then why were you sealed away until now?"

여자의 눈빛이 순간적으로 차가워졌다.

The woman's gaze suddenly turned cold.

"인간들이 두려움을 이기지 못했기 때문이지."

"Because humans could not overcome their fear."

"두려움이라고 해도 당신은 사람들을 해친 적이 없잖아."

"Even so, you've never harmed people."

"그들은 위험이 실제로 존재하는지보다 자신들이 불안해하는지를 더 중요하게 생각하거든."

"People care more about whether they feel anxious than whether danger truly exists."

카일은 그 말을 듣고 쉽게 대답하지 못했다.

Hearing those words, Kyle could not answer easily.

잠시 침묵이 흐른 뒤 여자가 천천히 입을 열었다.

After a moment of silence, the woman slowly spoke.

"이제 선택해야 해."

"Now you must choose."

"무슨 선택을 말하는 거야?"

"What choice are you talking about?"

"진실을 세상에 드러낼지 아니면 지금처럼 숨길지 말이야."

"Whether to reveal the truth to the world, or continue hiding it as before."

카일은 무거운 침묵 속에서 천천히 주먹을 쥐었다.

Within the heavy silence, Kyle slowly clenched his fist.

그는 오랫동안 찾아 헤매던 진실이 생각보다 훨씬 무거운 대가를 요구한다는 사실을 깨닫고 있었다.
