리안은 왕국의 북쪽 항구 도시에 있는 작은 시계 가게를 운영하고 있었다.

Rian was running a small clock shop in a northern harbor city of the kingdom.

"수명을 팔고 싶다고요?" 리안이 조심스럽게 물었다.

"You want to sell part of your lifespan?" Rian asked carefully.

낡은 코트를 입은 남자는 천천히 고개를 끄덕였다.

The man wearing an old coat slowly nodded.

"딸의 병을 고치려면 돈이 필요합니다."

"I need money to cure my daughter's illness."

"하지만 시간을 잃게 되면 당신은 그만큼 빨리 늙게 됩니다."

"But if you lose time, you will age that much faster."

남자는 씁쓸한 웃음을 지으며 창밖의 눈보라를 바라보았다.

The man gave a bitter smile and looked at the snowstorm outside the window.

"부모란 원래 그런 존재 아니겠습니까."

"Isn't that what parents are meant to be?"

리안은 잠시 말없이 서류를 바라보다가 결국 계약서에 도장을 찍었다.

남자가 떠난 뒤에도 리안은 쉽게 자리를 떠나지 못했다.

바로 그때 가게 문이 다시 열렸다.

Just then, the shop door opened again.

이번에는 검은 망토를 걸친 젊은 여자가 들어왔다.

This time, a young woman wearing a black cloak entered.

"당신이 시간을 거래한다는 시계공인가요?"

"Are you the clockmaker who trades time?"

리안은 순간적으로 표정을 굳혔다.

Rian's expression instantly stiffened.

"그런 소문을 누가 퍼뜨린 겁니까?"

"Who spread such rumors?"

여자는 대답하는 대신 낡은 회중시계를 탁자 위에 올려놓았다.

Instead of answering, the woman placed an old pocket watch on the table.

그 순간 리안의 얼굴이 창백하게 변했다.

"그 시계는…"

"That watch..."

"당신이 십 년 전에 사라진 여동생에게 준 것이죠."

"You gave it to your younger sister who disappeared ten years ago."

리안은 숨을 죽인 채 여자를 바라보았다.

여자는 한동안 망설이다가 천천히 망토를 벗었다.

리안의 손에서 찻잔이 떨어져 산산조각이 났다.

The teacup fell from Rian's hand and shattered into pieces.

Rian could not immediately understand what she meant.

"누군가 제 시간을 훔쳐 갔어요."

"Someone stole my time."

"그리고 그 사람은 아직도 이 도시에 살고 있죠."
